About Friends

The Friends of Kartchner Caverns State Park (Friends) was founded in 1999. The mission of Friends is to ensure continued preservation of Kartchner Caverns through advocacy, education and public awareness in partnership with the community and Arizona State Parks. Located in Southeastern Arizona, Kartchner Caverns State Park is the home of a live, stunning and pristine limestone cave with world-class features that have been protected since its discovery in 1974.  Kartchner Caverns is listed as one of the top ten caves in the world.  The vision of Friends is to be a forerunner in the active support of research, preservation, appreciation, and education of a living cave.

To achieve its mission and vision, Friends work to:

  1. provide education programs to school age children;
  2. support the more than 200 volunteer docents on park and in the community;
  3. organize public awareness events;
  4. fund ongoing research in the Caverns;
  5. provide continual education opportunities for Kartchner scientists.

Friends of Kartchner Caverns State Park is one of ten Friends organizations associated with individual Arizona State Parks.  As a private nonprofit friends has been able to provide valuable outreach and support beyond the scope of the state parks agency.

Friends is not a membership organization.  To become a friend you may subscribe to our online newsletter. You may become a supporter by making a financial donation. You may become a volunteer by applying through Arizona State parks.
